Evaluation of our Preliminary

Here is our preliminary task:

In lesson we showed our film to the rest of our class to recieve feedback on positive and negative aspects to our task.
The positive aspects (things they liked) were:
  • The variety of different camera angles and shots used
  • The narrative/speech fitted the 'thriller' genre and left the audience wanting to know more
  • The smooth editing
  • The establishment of the scene
  • The CU of the characters mouths giving a mystery about them
  • The way in which the package was followed as it was passed across the table, showing the importance of the package
  • The costumes/props helped establish characters and fitted into the thriller genre
  • The setting
  • Generic conventions that were followed - such as characters, setting and dialogue

The negative aspect (things they didn't like) were:

  • The absence of music, tones and clear dialogue which are vital for creating tension and atmopshere
  • The random subtitle changes

To solve these problems we changed the subtitles so that they were all the same font and size, however we could not add any music as with the tools we have it is difficult to create any suitable music, and the other sounds (including dialogue) could not be changed as we didn't have enough time to film again.

When I do my main task I will make sure that I check all equipment we use and create a more thorough storyboard so that when it comes to filming we know exactly what to do. I would also try to incorporate more thriller aspects such as more effective camera angles and shots. Finally I would make sure that the sound levels of our setting are suitable so that our actors can be heard clearly.

Altogether I believe that our preliminary task has been effective in showing typical conventions of the thriller genre and has also completed everything that the task has asked of us.

  1. This is a mixed bag! You have elements of Level 4:

Research and Planning for Level 4 for the entire portfolio is 16–20 marks.
 There is excellent organisation of actors, locations, costumes or props seen in the behind the scenes video
 There is excellent work on shotlists, layouts, drafting, scripting or storyboarding.
 There is an excellent level of care in the presentation of the research and planning
     Time management is excellent.

However, where is the PE? Where is the research into similar texts from lessons? More detail needed here. I would also like to see more information about the shoot.

A great start but needs securing.

    Current mark: 13/level 3
